  • SUNSHINE

Sunshine is a senior male Scarlet Macaw, likely at least 50 years old. He is timid at first but begins to show his personality in time. He’s goofy, likes to hang like a bat from his cage, make all kinds of silly noises at you, and can step on a stick for handling or transport. Upon intake, Sunshine was discovered to have an old healed femur fracture, cataracts in both eyes, arthritis in his wings, and one pinioned wing (poorly done). His personality is coming out now and we can see he can be a nicer bird with proper care and handling. Sunshine is more independent, preferring to be talked to but not handled, though he CAN be handled in the right situation and when he is comfortable with it. He will step on a stick as well, so transporting him is not a problem. He will want lots of reassurance due to his waning vision and has a strong startle reflex. He ALWAYS has one eye on you. Sunshine seems to like the company of other birds like him, but not directly interacting. He is now cleared for adoption though he will still need somebody medically savvy (or at least experience with seniors) and with plenty of patience. We don’t think he will ever be a “friendly” bird per se, but he will be a great companion nonetheless.

  • ZAZOO

Zazoo is a 20 year old male Blue and Gold. He has some physical issues that will require a calm, patient home. He cannot fly, has poor balance, and sometimes suffers seizures. The vet believed they are stress induced after discovering a small infarct on CT. Zazoo is super hyper and loves to give everyone a big “HELLO!” as they walk by. He loves to talk to kids but is not safe to be out with them. Zazoo can step on a stick for transport, he is no longer comfortable stepping onto an arm without biting very hard. He was previously very handleable but his seizures make him more aggressive. They’re controlled well and its been a few years since he’s even had one.

  • MAC

Mac is a 35ish year old male Scarlet that has returned after 14 years. He likes men, but can be a tricky bird to handle for inexperienced owners. He is warming up to volunteers but always prefers men. He knows how to step onto an arm no matter the person as long as it has a towel over it, and will take an unshelled almond as a reward. Mac has really blossomed into a quiet, friendly guy who just wants a stable place to be. He has some digestive issues that make his poops look bad-he's been fecal tested and it seems he tends to build up yeast pretty frequently. Reducing his fruit intake and supplementing him with a probiotic has really helped and should be a long-term treatment. Mac is ABV+ so knowledge of the virus is necessary.

  • RILEY

Riley is a female Calico hybrid. She is a big active bird that needs a keeper who wants to spend time together, and knows how to interact with large macaws. She shows a strong tendency to bond with one person and reject others.... She prefers men and will step on a stick or arm for someone she TRUSTS. Riley requires large macaw experience and plenty of patience and understanding. Since losing her long term mate, she has become more open to interacting with people. Riley WILL attack other birds if they get too close, so she’d do much better as an only bird or given plenty of space from othrs.

  • MARLEY

Marley is an 11 year old male Military. He is very picky about women and aggressive towards all men. He doesn’t play well with other birds. When he finds a woman he likes, he is flirtatious and active. He is a great chewer and loves to swing on his tree! We’ve been treating him for thyroid disease and he’s been improving on medication so this might be a long term thing for him.

Wallflowers

  • ZAPPA

Zappa is a 22 year old male Ruby hybrid. He can be friendly with people he likes, accepting treats and pets regularly once he decides you’re okay. It may take quite a while for him to get comfortable in a home (a year or more)-he’s been here many years and can be unpredictable at times. Zappa really wants someone to hang out with without the pressure of being handled a whole lot. He likes to create mischief and has decided his neighbor Fred BG might be a friend.

  • TC

What does TC stand for, you ask? We don’t know, but there are endless possibilities! TC is a female Harlequin hybrid of unknown age. She enjoys being with people, but will need a handicapped accessible living space due to disabled feet and legs. She will need a careful and dedicated keeper. TC is very noisy, even for a macaw, loves to greet her favorite people, and is beautiful to look at.

  • WILLY

Wily is a 31 year old male Calico hybrid macaw. He is totally gorgeous, and bonds to only a single person. He only likes women, and will be aggressive towards males. He will step on a stick but is happy to be a grumpy bird with plenty of space to play.

  • BOB

Bob is a 30 year old male Scarlet macaw. He tops the scales at a whopping 1500g, but has been as high as 1900! Obviously, Bob is prone to obesity and his diet will need carefully managed over time. He steals food from people and birds alike and doesn’t care about the consequences. He cannot fly, possibly because of his history of obesity. For a Scarlet, Bob is pretty laid back. He can hang out on an arm for 10-15 minutes before having enough and getting nippy/rowdy. Once he gets to this point, he needs to be left alone to decompress again. He likes to chew holes in shirts and have a head scratch when he feels up to it. one thing to know is that Bob can be VERY defensive when his cage is touched or moved. He tends to wander when left unsupervised, and sometimes needs protected from himself. He’s a big boy and not the smartest bird, but we love him.

Cuddlebugs

  • TIKI

Tiki is a 20 year old female “Maui Sunset” macaw, a hybrid of a red front and blue & gold. She is very small at 580g and is a curious and friendly bird. She is very high energy and needs just the right amount of stimulation. She can be nippy at times, as expected with a hybrid, but she just needs some structure. Her very first home was extremely neglectful and she was rescued by her owners. They’ve been able to provide a good safe place for her up to this point, and we’d like to help her control her plucking. Any adopter will need macaw experience due to her mental needs, and be willing to continue her rehabilitation. She can be massively snuggly when she likes you! She cannot go to a home with DOGS.

  • VINCEY

Vincey is a 30 year old female Blue and Gold. She is spunky, friendly when she knows you, and adaptable. She can be very vocal when she wants, likes to watch the other birds from her roost, and seems to like most people that treat her well. She likes to say hi and yell, then come to you on her own terms. If left unattended, she will go visit other birds and look for her person. Her strong personality can rub other birds the wrong way and start a bicker battle, so caution will have to be taken if going to a home with other macaws. Due to her propensity to be easily irritated, we wouldn’t recommend her go to a home with any small children. She keeps herself busy making dinosaur noises and will warm up to individuals over time. She has a congenital cataract of sorts in her left eye but it doesn’t seem to affect her vision.

  • PACO

Paco is a male blue and gold who is at least 43 years old. He was a wildcaught bird, so we don't know exactly how old he is, but his owner had him for 43 years. Paco takes some time to warm up to new people, but it really doesn't take too long to make a snuggly bird out of him. He's looking for a nice easy place to live out his days and get doted on. His entire life he has lived cageless, but doesn't seem to mind being in one or out. He is surprisingly well adjusted and will be great for someone looking for a bit of an older bird! Paco does seem to prefer a single person at a time, readily shifting affections to people he deems friendly. He hasn’t learned how to step on an arm and will instead try and feed you, so will need a little work on that. He will instead step onto a shoulder when he is comfortable.

  • MAGIC

Magic is a female Blue and Gold Macaw, thought to be around 14. She has quite the harrowing story, having been starved in her last home and arriving at IPR near death. She made a fabulous recovery and it’s been 7 years since. Magic is a woman lover, often waving and dancing with whomever she decides she likes. She will fiercely protect that person and doesn’t like men, often going after them if she feels threatened. She likely won’t do well in a home with kids under 10. Magic also really doesn’t like sharing affections with other animals, so extra caution will have to be taken if she is to go to a home with existing birds or dogs. Magic is a lot of fun, in good health, and ready to find her perfect family again .

  • CAPTAIN

Captain is a shy, gentle soul that needs plenty of time to come around. He has a lot of anxiety that we are hoping to ease, plus a chronic regurgitation problem. He would do best in a quieter home, a bird or two to keep him company, and someone with experience in reserved birds. He is finally beginning to show his excited side and stepping up for people. He’s not an aggressive bird at all, and he has an old wing injury thus cannot fly.

Captain arrived regurgitating a lot. Through much trial and error, we found the main triggers are pellets (any type and size) and dry seed mix. We are now supplementing his fresh foods with peanut butter oatmeal and cooked beans/legumes. He is in much better shape than when he arrived! He plucks his sides now and then and is likely prone to developing crop infections when kept on pellets/seeds. Due to this we recommend keeping him on a probiotic (Fauna&Flora) each morning. His diet modifications are pretty manageable and we believe Captain will open right up in the proper home.

  • BOOLEY

Booley is a new arrival. Her name has been shortened from “Boulanger”. So far she is quite nervous, but puts most of her trust in a single person at a time. She’s not aggressive in any way and is going to take quite a while to warm up to her people and realize she’s safe. She has lived her whole life with the same owner which is why this is such a big transition for her. Booley has been on a pretty awful seed diet with people food as treats, but is now eating seed and Harrison’s. She’s still a little picky about her veggies but has come a long way. We know Booley will be a lovely companion for somebody and might prefer women, but so far is okay with everyone here. She has never met children so we aren’t sure how she’d do with a family yet. Booley has just begun talking to people she likes, regularly asking for a cracker.

  • PACO

Paco is a female Scarlet Macaw in her mid 20’s. She seems to be a bit of an instigator with other birds and may benefit from being an only bird (or only big bird). Paco wants a male companion, someone who can spend plenty of one-on-one time rubbing her tongue and holding her little feet. She enjoys talking when she thinks nobody is around and wants to know if you have an apple for her? As you can see, she is quite the “bat bird” and is hanging from her cage a lot. So far, she’s only liked men and becomes very frustrated around women and children. She’ll be a good companion for a man with no kids who can dedicate plenty of time to her. She has decided, after a nice settle in period, that she really doesn’t like women and will almost always try to bite them.

Wildlings

  • COBAR

Cobar is a male Blue and Gold of unknown age. He is big, strong, beautiful, and has always been unhandleable. He is becoming more of a people bird and enjoys being talked to. In the right environment, he can step up on his own terms (stick first, arm second) but is content to sit back and watch the world.

  • ROCCO & BUBBA

Bubba and Rocco are a male Blue and Gold pair who both lost their long-time partners and bonded together. Bubba is 27ish, and Rocco is 18. They are big, loud, boisterous, and active. They'll make a great pair for someone with room for their hilarious play and a desire to watch them act like macaws. Rocco can be handled, WITH CARE but are happy left on their own. Luckily, they are both stick tame and can be transferred to different perches.

  • ROCKY & ZAZU

Rocky and Zazu are male Ruby hybrids. Rocky is 34, and Zazu is 16. These guys will bite to defend their cage, their food dishes, or just out of excitement. They are not for the timid or inexperienced. This pair is spectacular, but will need a lot of room and a careful handling. Both have histories of aggression toward other macaws, and will need a home where they can be physically kept separate from other birds.

  • MARLEY & DURANGO

Marley and Durango are two aggressive Blue and Gold macaws that need a lot of space to be wild birds. Marley is 17, while Durango is 22. Marley has a tendency to lay eggs, but they get a calcium supplement during that time and careful monitoring. These guys will never want to be handled.

  • BUGSY

Bugsy is a 22 year old male blue and gold macaw. He is hyper and goofy, loving to sing to himself. He prefers the company of birds to humans despite being single now. He can be opinionated and nippy, reserved, and obsessive. Bugsy will step on a stick for transporting, though it may take more training for him to be totally comfortable. He will step on an arm on his own terms ONLY and has only stepped up for men. He’d be happiest in a home with other birds to entertain him.
