Iowa Parrot Rescue is now offering boarding to the public! We have reasonable rates, discounts for extended stays, trained staff and volunteers, plus a more private experience for your comfort and peace of mind.

Reservations are required at least 48 hours in advance. Emergency boarding can be considered on a case-by-case basis, as space is limited. Holiday boarding must be requested 3 weeks in advance.

WHAT TO EXPECT

You can be rest assured your bird will be safe here, as all of our birds are free from infectious disease and very thoroughly vetted by an avian vet. Included in your boarding fee is daily food and water changes, fresh food, Harrison’s pellets, and nuts for treats (walnuts, almonds, pistachios). Any diet limitations can be accommodated, and Goldenfeast seed can be given for an extra $1 per day if it is not provided. We do ask all boarders to bring any special pellets or food that we don’t have here, to ensure your bird will eat well. You must provide enough for the entire length of their stay.

We proudly feed a balanced diet of Harrison’s pellets, cooked vegetable mix (carrots, peas, corn, green beans, lima beans, broccoli, sweet potato), fresh raw vegetables 4 days a week (squash, celery, radishes, beets), and fresh fruit 3 days a week (apples, bananas, oranges).

We provide clean cages that are species appropriate and set up with a variety of perches. We can provide some toys, but you can bring your bird’s favorites. Cages are cleaned two to three times a week, bowls changed daily, and water bowls scrubbed each morning.

We have Austin air purifiers running constantly to provide your feathered friend with the best air quality. We also have specialized, trained staff and volunteers who can socialize and handle your bird during their stay, so they don’t get bored or lonely. Your bird will be treated like one of our own!

MEDICAL INFORMATION

Medications can be given for an extra $1 per day for chronic issues. Birds must be free of acute infections or illness and must have a recent (within 12 months) vet check with an avian vet. PBFD testing is required before entering the building and can be done for $25 through Animal Genetics. Plan accordingly to allow a week for results. For veterinary suggestions, contact us. If you are not comfortable getting the blood test yourself (requires clipping a nail short and collecting a drop of blood), schedule a trim with your vet and bring along materials to collect the blood.

Handicapped birds are welcome! We have ample experience with all types of handicaps, and can reasonably outfit a cage to be appropriate. Any serious handicaps may require bringing their own cage setup.
